چکیده

We evaluate the application of 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy to the determination of the composition of magnetite (Fe3O4)/maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) mixtures and the stoichiometry of magnetite-maghemite solid solutions. In particular, we consider a recently proposed model-independent method which does not rely on a priori assumptions regarding the nature of the sample, other than that it is free of other Fe-containing phases. In it a single parameter, δRT—the ‘centre of gravity’, or area weighted mean isomer shift at room temperature, T = 295 ± 5 K—is extracted by curve-fitting a sample’s Mössbauer spectrum, and is correlated to the sample’s composition or stoichiometry. We present data on highpurity magnetite and maghemite powders, and mixtures thereof, as well as comparison literature data from nanoparticulate mixtures and solid solutions, to show that a linear correlation exists between δRT and the numerical proportion of Fe atoms in the magnetite environment: α = Femagnetite/Fetotal δ δ = − m RT o ( )/ , where δo = 0.3206 ± 0.0022 mm s−1 and m = 0.2135 ± 0.0076 mm s−1. We also present equations to relate α to the weight percentage w of magnetite in mixed phases, and the magnetite stoichiometry x = Fe2+/Fe3+ in solid solutions. The analytical method is generally applicable, but is most accurate when the absorption profiles are sharp; in some samples this may require spectra to be recorded at reduced temperatures. We consider such cases and provide equations to relate δ T ( ) to the corresponding α value. Monitoring of the aging of magnetic nanoparticles using Mössbauer spectroscopy

Magnetic nanoparticles made of magnetite have the advantage to be biocompatible and to have a good saturation magnetisation. In this work we show that magnetite nanoparticles change their magnetic and chemical characteristics over time, depending on their storage conditions. To determine the oxidation state of the iron in the core of the nanoparticles Mössbauer spectroscopy was used at 4.2 K. T...

Magnetic nanoparticles for in vivo use: a critical assessment of their composition.

Three different magnetic samples with particle sizes ranging from 10 to 30 nm were prepared by wet chemical methods. The powders were heated at 100, 150, 200, and 250 °C during 30 min under air. Ferrous and total iron contents were determined immediately after the synthesis and after the thermal treatments. All samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission and integral low-energ...

Nondestructive Solutions by a and Complete Analysis of Magnetite-Maghemite Solid Combined X-Ray Diffraction/Fluorescence Method

This paper describes a nondestructive and complete analysis of magnetite(FeO • Fe203)-maghemite(y-Fe203) solid solutions including minor constituents: the proposed method consists of measurements of the lattice constant and X-ray fluorescent determination of the minor constituents. The diffraction angles of the solid solution were corrected using a silicon internal standard for calculation of t...

Arsenic and chromium removal by mixed magnetite-maghemite nanoparticles and the effect of phosphate on removal.

Adsorption of arsenic and chromium by mixed magnetite and maghemite nanoparticles from aqueous solution is a promising technology. In the present batch experimental study, a commercially grade nano-size 'magnetite', later identified in laboratory characterization to be mixed magnetite-maghemite nanoparticles, was used in the uptake of arsenic and chromium from different water samples. The inten...

Study of Dronino Iron Meteorite Weathering in Clay Sand Using Mössbauer Spectroscopy

Weathering products of two fragments of Dronino iron ungrouped meteorite found in the wet and drier clay sand were studied using X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy with a high velocity resolution. The products of metal oxidation in the internal and external surface layers were different for both fragments. The weathering products in fragment found in the wet clay sand contain magnetit...
